My dad caught the commercial for the Neat Scanner setup. He does have his own scanner (not on the official list, but worth testing-can always get a Fujitsu doc scanner later if needed), but I wanted to see if there was any other recommended/suitable software for less than the $80 (or more, but better/easier). Or is NeatWorks really that nifty of software?

I don't have that much paperwork so I've never looked into this stuff, but he has a ton, and would like to empty a few drawers of his filing cabinets. As it turns out, I have been in the market for a new scanner recently. I checked out the Neat Desk for Mac (comes with Neat Works), but it didn't have the greatest reviews. I bought the. My dad has the Windows version, and it has worked great for years. It actually includes a full version of Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 so you can edit PDFs and all that. I am awaiting receipt of mine, but based on using my dads scanner it works great and should churn right through anything you can throw at it. I bought the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1500m. The ScanSnap series would definitely be the standard recommendation.

They are very, very good, and have solid Mac support. It makes a big difference to be able to rapidly one-button feed through a bunch of documents, have it all compiled into OCR'd PDFs or whatever else you'd like automatically. They're directly supported by a number of different information management applications (DEVONthink and the like) too.

In other words, I don't keep copies of receipts for buying toilet paper at Target, those I keep for a couple months in a folder, then shred them once I've reconciled my bank account and found no issues. For the receipts I do scan, I put them in Evernote as well as an app called Home Inventory. For a scanner I have a Canon Lide 600 scanner at home, but I mostly take the receipts to work where we have five different high volume copier/scanners that do b/w & color.
